Tips For Having a Modern Wedding Shower

Wedding showers, also known as bridal showers, have romantic beginnings. According to oral legends, the friends of the bride would gather together and bring gifts, ensuring that she would have enough dowries to marry the man she loves. These ancient "gift giving parties" were most likely held for brides who did not have a dowry because her father did not approve of the groom.

The monetary value of wedding showers made it tacky for the bride's mother to host the party. But today, the purpose of this gathering is radically different. The fate of the bride and groom no longer hinges on whether or not enough dowries can be collected during the party. In fact, a wedding can take place even without a wedding shower. The modern bridal shower is an opportunity for the friends of the bride and groom to show their support of the upcoming marriage in a fun, relaxed, and informal setting.

What is a modern bride to be party?

A modern bride to be party is a fun event that is organized mainly by the bridesmaids but one of the bride's friends, who may not be part of the entourage, can also put it together. The party can take place anywhere, such as a beach, a restaurant, or a rented party room. It can also be held in the house of the bride's mother. A bridal shower hosted by the bride's mother is no longer viewed as tacky because it is the last chance of the bride's family and friends to enjoy each other before the wedding. Gift giving, of course, is still practiced but the gifts need not be practical. In fact, the gifts can be silly and suggestive of the wedding night. And finally, wedding showers are no longer an exclusive activity for the bride and her female friends. The groom and the male friends can join the party!

How to organize a modern wedding shower?

If you are the one assigned to organize this event, then here are few tips that can help you put together an enjoyable and affordable party.

  • When: The shower should be held at least two months before the anticipated wedding day. The party invitations, of course, should be sent weeks ahead. To allow many of the couple's working friends to attend, the bridal shower should be scheduled on a weekend afternoon, however, this is not a rigid rule.

  • Who: The guests should be those who were invited to the wedding. It would be awkward to explain why you would invite someone to the wedding shower and not to the wedding. If you plan to include the groom and some male friends, make sure that the activity you choose would be meaningful and romantic for the couple.

  • Where: An all-female gathering can be a day at the spa but a male-and-female party should revolve around the wedding's theme or the couple's favorite. For example, if the couple loves tennis, the party can be on a tennis court. Keep in mind that there is nothing wrong with hosting the party at a house.

Infection Process and Infection Control

Throughout history man has faced the spread of infection, pondering its causes and how to treat it or prevent it. Infections have been known to affect major segments of the population, as did the plague in the Middle Ages. Although important advances have been made in understanding and treating infection, the threat of infection looms as large as it ever has. Newer enemies in the battle of infection emerge such as HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV). Once-conquered enemies become resistant to treatment, as it the case of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Healthcare personnel typically encounter numerous patients on a daily basis, many of whom may be harboring these or other agents of infection. Measures to prevent the spread of infection must be taken in the course of treating all patients.

Below we explain the infection process and describe infection control measures needed to protect healthcare patients, staff, visitors, and those who do business with healthcare facilities.

What Is Infection?

Our environment is full of microorganisms (microscopic organisms) referred to as microbes. Microbes include bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses. The majority of microbes are nonpathogenic, meaning they do not cause disease under normal conditions. Microbes that are capable of causing disease (ie., pathogenic) are called pathogens. If a pathogen invades the body and the conditions are favorable for it to multiply and cause injurious effects or disease, the resulting condition is called an infection. The pathogen responsible for causing the infection is referred to as the infectious or causative agent. Infection can be local (restricted to a small area of the, body) or systemic, in which the entire body is affected.

Communicable Infections

Some pathogenic microbes cause infections that can be spread from person to person. These infections are called communicable infections and the diseases that result are called communicable diseases. A division of the U.S. Public Health Service called the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is charged with the investigation and control of various diseases, especially those that are communicable and have epidemic potential. The CDC recommends safety precautions to protect healthcare workers and others from infection.

Nosocomial Infections

Approximately 5 % of patients in the United States are exposed to and contract some sort of infection after admission to a hospital or other healthcare facility. These hospital or healthcare facility-acquired infections are called nosocomial infections. Nosocomial infections can result from contact with infected personnel, other patients, and visitors, or contaminated equipment. The most common nosocomial infection in the United States is urinary tract infection. The Hospital Infection Control Practice Advisory Committee (HICPAC), established in 1991, advises the CDC on updating guidelines regarding prevention of nosocomial infection.

Source Of Infection

The source is the origin of infectious microorganisms, also called the reservoir. Sources of infectious microbes include infected humans or anima1s and contaminated articles and equipment. In a healthcare setting, human sources of infectious microbes can be patients, personnel, or visitors, and can include those with active disease, those whose disease is in the incubation period, and those who are chronic carriers of a dis- ease. Another potential source of infectious microbes is a person's own normal flora (microorganisms that normally live on the skin and other areas of the human body).

Inanimate objects such as contaminated equipment can be a major source of infection in a healthcare setting. Whether or not an inanimate source is capable of transmitting infection depends upon the amount of contamination, the viability or ability of the organism to survive on the source, the virulence or degree to which an organism is capable of causing disease, and the amount of time elapsed between when the source was contaminated and when it was contacted.

For example, the virus that causes hepatitis B is much more virulent, or capable of causing disease from a small amount of infective material, than HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. It is also more viable, meaning it is capable of surviving longer on surfaces than is HIV. However, if a long enough time elapses from the time of contamination until contact by a susceptible host, the microbe is no longer alive and is not capable of transmitting disease.

Modes Of Transmission

There are five basic modes or routes of infection transmission: contact, droplet, airborne, vehicle, and vector. The same microbe can be transmitted by more than one route.

Contact transmission

Contact transmission is the most frequent mode of infection transmission. There are two types of contact transmission, direct transmission and indirect transmission.

Direct contact transmission involves direct, physical transfer of a pathogenic microbe to a susceptible host through close or intimate contact such as touching or kissing.

Indirect contact transmission involves personal contact by a susceptible host with contaminated inanimate objects such as patient bed linens, clothing, dressings, and eating utensils. It includes contact with phlebotomy equipment such as gloves, needles, specimen tubes, and phlebotomy carts and trays. It also includes less obvious contaminated objects such as doorknobs and faucet handles. The transfer of infectious microbes from contaminated hands to a susceptible host is also considered indirect contact transmission.

Droplet transmission

Droplet transmission involves the transfer of the infective microbe to the mucous membranes of the nose or mouth or the conjunctiva (mucous membranes) of the eyes of a susceptible individual through sneezing, coughing, or talking by an infected per- son. Droplet transmission can also occur during procedures such as suctioning and throat swab collection. It differs from airborne transmission in that droplets do not travel more than 3 feet, and do not remain suspended in air.

Airborne transmission

Airborne transmission involves dissemination of droplet nuclei. Droplet nuclei are the residue of evaporated droplets generated by sneezing, coughing, or talking. Infectious microbes within droplet nuclei can remain viable even though suspended in the air or in dust particles for long periods. Microbes carried in this manner can become widely dispersed before being inhaled by or deposited on a susceptible host. For this reason, special air handling and ventilation are required for rooms of patients having infections with airborne transmission. Persons entering the room must wear a snug-fitting mask with a special filter. M. tuberculosis, rubeola virus, and varicella virus are the most common microorganisms transmitted by the airborne route.

Vector transmission

Vector transmission involves the transfer of the microbe by an insect, arthropod, or animal. An example of vector transmission is the transmission of malaria by a mosquito or the plague by rodent fleas.

Vehicle transmission

Vehicle transmission involves the transmission of the infective microbe through contaminated food, water, or drugs. Examples of vehicle transmission are salmonella infection from handling contaminated chicken and shigella infection from drinking contaminated water. The transmission of hepatitis and HIV through blood transfusion is also considered vehicle transmission.

Susceptible Host

A susceptible host is someone who has decreased ability to resist infection. Susceptibility is affected by age, health, and the immune status of the individual. For example, newborns whose immune systems are not yet developed and old people whose immune systems are no longer functioning properly are more susceptible to infections. In addition, disease, antibiotic treatment, and immunosuppressive drugs may compromise a person's resistance to infection. Procedures such as surgery, anesthesia, and insertion of catheters can also leave a patient more susceptible to infection. Recovery from a particular virus or vaccination against a virus also affects susceptibility. A healthy person who has received a vaccination against a disease-causing virus, or who has recovered from infection with a particular virus, has developed antibodies against that virus and is considered to be immune, or unlikely to develop the disease.

Breaking The Chain Of Infection

Breaking the chain of infection means stopping infections at the source, eliminating means of transmission, and reducing or eliminating the susceptibility of potential hosts. Ways to prevent transmission of infectious microbes are proper hand washing; use of gloves, gowns, masks, and other protective equipment when indicated; proper waste disposal; isolation procedures; insect and rodent control; and decontamination of surfaces and instruments. Susceptibility of potential hosts can be reduced through proper nutrition, reduction of stress, and immunization against common pathogens.

What Makes a Great TV Talk Show Host?

It looks so easy. Can't anybody fool around for an hour chatting with celebrities? If you get a hot celebrity like our neighbor north of here, Bruce Willis, he takes over the show and you can sit back and enjoy. That should be easy.

The other night Bruce Willis came on Letterman and I could hardly wait for him to get out there. At first, I couldn't see what his joke was going to be. Then he turned his head. The right side of his face was plastered with buckshot.

Not too long ago, he came on Letterman in a green suit. I don't remember why. I just know it was funny and I expect fun from Bruce Willis when he appears on a show. I can't imagine what it would be like if he showed up on the Daily Show. He and Jon Stewart would blow our minds, wouldn't they?

Last night Leno had a sexy actress on the show. She is single and prefers dogs to men. She has six dogs as I remember and she travels with four of them. People are interested in dogs so her appearance was a success. (Not!) The actress had large mammary glands and they were somewhat exposed.

Normally, Jay would spend a good deal of time about how sexy his guest looks, but the young actress was too sexy and nothing had to be said about her appearance.

By ignoring the sex topic other than a casual comment that his wife was watching, Jay had a better interview than he usually does because he talked about the actress's interest and not his interest.

The interview was about the same as the last time this beauty came on his show, but nobody seemed to care. They were there for the view.

The interviews on talk shows are not enough to maintain interest. Often those interviewed are brainless twits and as boring as dairy mud. Paris Hilton came on the Letterman show and couldn't give an answer to the simplest question. She had nothing to say and that is what she said.

Other activities have to be included.

The audience want some structure in the show that allows surprise. Without that, the show is dead.

Did you see Oprah give away the cars?

That was a media event.

Did you see Letterman walk Oprah, arm in arm, across the street to the theater?

Did you see Letterman's crew drop watermelons off the Sullivan Theater Building to the street below?

And that is the point of this article.

The job of the host of a talk show is to make sure that the audience is continually entertained.

Leno is a standup comedian and he therefore uses that as his forte. Letterman is a clown, and downplays that part of the show. When I say "downplay" I mean he keeps his monologue short.

Helen Degeneres likes to dance on her show. Her dancing is awful and I always hit the channel button when she does it.

Some gimmicks don't work for bearded old men.

If I were to ask you how Leno and Letterman compare with Johnny Carson, you would probably say that there is no comparison.

Carson was the master of the monologue (and the skit) as was Jack Benny and Bob Hope and Rodney Dangerfield and ten other comedians you know. So the monologue isn't everything.

Letterman generally does a better job of interviewing then Leno, but neither compare with Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jon Steward, or Fred Allen.

They get by.

Leno likes to make fun of people and things.

He does not see irony like a comedian like Jerry Seinfeld but he sees the obvious.

He likes to go out on the street and interview the flotsam and jetsam that flows along. He is sexually minded and usually is looking for something sexy about every female that walks down the street (and who joins him in celebrity chit chat.) Letterman is a lady sniffer too but to a much less degree than Leno. Leno looks for lechery in the men.

Last night Leno was asking the audience to guess if street people had a tattoo. The audience was very good at this. Everybody had a tattoo but one and they guessed that too.

This type of antic is good because it brings the audience into the program. They are taking part. He does the same thing when asking the audience if a particular weird item sold on EBay.

Letterman uses sideshow tactics to get a laugh. His skit Will it Float is a contest between him and Paul. The audience is not directly participating but each person in the audience forms an opinion. So he gets the same effect.

What do the girl with the rings and the girl with the grinder and the two stand-around girls have to do with this act? Everything! Every picture needs a frame.

The most important factor for a person that has to stand in front of a television audience night after night or day after day is to develop a continuing relationship with each member of the audience. This is not an easy thing to do for some people.

Letterman is not a personal kind of guy. He keeps things close to his chest.

Leno is somewhat this way, but Leno has a warm personality, almost loving, and people relate to him.

Watch Leno with animals versus Letterman.

Letterman wonders if the animal is going to pee on him.

Leno holds the animal close and loves it. That transfers to the audience.

Oprah is a monumental warmth bunny. Everybody loves her and wants to get closer too her. (That must make her life hell.)

Leno is going to be replaced by Conan O'Brian is a few years. Conan lacks now what is needed to succeed in that role. He is mainly a clown and probably doesn't have a serious bone in his body. He likes the skit. After a while his tactics can become tedious. But the host is not the whole show. Conan should do well because he is well know, will be more seasoned, and will have good writers and show directors that will get the show into a successful format. Those writers and directors should start practicing now.

Jon Stewart is hosting the Oscars this year.

Letterman completely bombed out on that assignment. He made an absolute ass of himself and he still regrets it.

Jon Stewart will be a big success if he doesn't get too vulgar. I think he will entertain the actors more than the television audience. That is a risk he has to take.

Success on the Oscar show will probably bring Jon greater opportunities than what is offered on Comedy Channel.

Watch out Letterman and Leno!

How to Host a Snow White Birthday Party

Want to throw your princess the fairest birthday party of all? You don't need a magic mirror to tell you a Snow White theme party will make her special day the most memorable in all of the land!

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was the first animated film produced by Walt Disney and released in 1937. The film is ranked by the American Film Institute as the greatest animated film of all time so it's no wonder after seventy-three years she is still a favorite Disney princess among girls and adults.

Begin planning her fairytale birthday party by picking a date, location and time then move onto the guest list and invitations.

Invitations
Let Snow White do the inviting by creating your own and unique invitations. A cutout of the princess, the magic mirror or other characters containing the party's information is a great start. Use royal language like "hear ye hear ye" and invite them to your cottage in the forest or castle for a grand ball. Request guest wear their finest royal attire or dress up as their favorite Disney princesses (of course it's a fun idea to dress the birthday girl up as Snow White).

Decorations
Decorating for the party can be made easy by purchasing blue, red and gold streamers and balloons from your local party supply store. Make guests feel like they are celebrating with the movie's characters by placing pictures of Snow White, the Seven Dwarfs, Prince Charming, Wicked Queen and the magic mirror throughout the space. Make the birthday girl feel like a true princess by creating a throne with pillows, streamers and balloons and place apples embellished with ribbon on the tables as center pieces.

Activities
There are many easy and fun activities you can do to keep guest entertained. If you didn't request guests to wear royal attire, play dress up or do makeovers and nails. Turn classic party games into Snow White games by playing character bingo and pinning the lips on Prince Charming or Dopey. Let them get creative by decorating foam tiaras or locker mirrors. You can also play a fun game of bobbing for apples, but be careful for the poisonous ones, or watch the classic Disney movie.

Food
Guests may be skeptical of any apples lying around, so ask the birthday girl what she would like to feast on, after all it's her party. A tea party is also an excellent choice by offering guests mini sandwiches, macaroni salads, cheese, Jello squares and punch. Gooseberry pie was also a favorite among the Seven Dwarfs. Eat off of Snow White paper plates or solid red, blue or gold plates with matching cups and silverware.

Gift Bags
Thank guests for coming with a gift bag. While picking up decorations, check out favors at the party supply store. Character pencils, stickers, candy and jewelry are fun and inexpensive items to fill your goodie bags with and a great way for guests to remember the fairytale party.

Does your princess love Snow White? Then dress her up in royal attire from Snow White Costumes.com! The online retailer carries child and adult Snow White costumes great for Halloween, birthday parties or playtime. They also offer a great selection of accessories!

Vasectomy or Tubes Tied?

Whether the husband gets a vasectomy or the wife gets a tubal ligation is usually decided by who has the strongest will. Vasectomies and tubal ligations are safe surgeries, but the operation on a man is a simple cutting under the skin in an office, while the operation on a woman requires going into her belly in an operating room. Over the long haul, they both are safe and effective in preventing pregnancies.

Two studies seemed to show that having a vasectomy increases a man's chances of getting prostate cancer, but more recent studies show no increased risk. When scientists compare two variables to see if one causes the other, they should determine whether one factor causes the other, or is just associated with it. They use two study groups: men who have had vasectomies and those who have not. Men who have had vasectomies tend to be more sexually active than those who have not had this procedure; otherwise, they wouldn't need to have the vasectomy done. Three recent studies show that increased sexual activity is a risk factor for prostate cancer. Those at increased risk include men who have the earliest first sexual intercourse, the most partners, the most marriages and the most frequent orgasms. However, at present most doctors feel that sexual activity is not a risk factor for prostate cancer. Men who have had vasectomies are also less likely to use condoms because they don't have to worry about pregnancy, so they are more likely to pick up venereal diseases that may or may not be associated with prostate cancer.

Doctors cut the spermatic cord as it leaves the testicles to carry sperm to the outside. Beyond the cut, two glands, the prostate and seminal vesicles, attach to and supply most of the ejaculatory fluid. A vasectomy does not change a man's hormone levels or the appearance or amount of fluid in his ejaculate. One study shows that you must be cautious after you have had a vasectomy. Sometimes sperm hides in the tubes for months. The usual waiting period is to check a man six weeks after he has had a vasectomy to see if any sperm are still in his ejaculate. This study shows that you have to wait six months to be checked to see if it is safe to make love without causing a pregnancy.

The bachelor party is a common rite of passage for most soon to be married man. Over the years the bachelor party has gone from a night out with the guys to a full blown event. The bachelor party getaway vacation is becoming increasing popular. So much so that many travel destinations and resorts have gone out of their way to attract young man looking for a wild time. With that in mind let's count down the top five bachelor party destinations.

5. Whistler, British Columbia, Canada

Be sure to visit Tommy Africa's Bar, voted the top dance club by the locals. Finally, head to the only strip joint in town, The Boot Pub. The legal drinking age is 18 in Canada.

4. New Orleans, Louisiana

Where can you get away with asking a woman to show you the goods and not get slapped for it? Two words. Mardi Gras. Where better to spend a bachelor party than at the ultimate party. No man can truly enjoy Mardi Gras without participating in some beads swapping. This is not going to happen with the missus around so do your buddy a favor and head to the Big Easy with the guys. There are actually bachelor party organizers who host balcony parties for the event.

New Orleans is more than just Mardi Gras. Hang out on Bourbon Street and enjoy a "Hurricane" at the Pat O'Briens bar. And with a name like Temptations Club, it may be hard for any man to stay out trouble at this strip club.

3. South Beach, Florida

Sun, sand, and tons of beautiful babes. South Beach is home to the trendiest nightclubs in America. Stay at the Clevlander hotel, a favorite spot for bachelor parties. There are over forty strip clubs in the heart of Montreal and most are full-contact. Americans get the benefit of the exchange rate plus admission, dances, and drinks are cheaper than you might find in Vegas. In addition to the strip clubs, Montreal has a happening nightlife scene with plenty of popular nightclubs and pubs.

1. Las Vegas Nevada

Vegas, baby, Vegas! Could it possibly be anyplace else? This Disneyland of Debauchery is the number one bachelor party destination. What's not love about this city that never sleeps. First class strip joints, hot nightclubs, cheap booze, and enough neon to burn a hole in your retinas. If you have the cash there is practically nothing you can't do in Vegas.

It would be impossible to list all the fun things for you and your crew to do here. Why not start the day of right with a game of golf. Spend your afternoon by the pool admiring the "scenery". Indulge your inner child and hit all the attractions. Test your luck at the Blackjack tables. All this can be done with a beer in one hand. This must be what heaven is like.

A little tip. A bit of planning could go a long way here. Have some idea of what you want to do because there is no way you can do it all in one visit. Check out a website like http://www.bachelorandbachelorettepartyinlasvegas.com for information on all the options available for your bachelor party.

Easy Web Hosting - The Easiest Web Host For You

Easy Web Hosting means subscribing to an online service in order to get your website onto the internet and being able to manage your website easily from their control panel. Paying for web hosting is like renting a small amount of space on a big commercial computer that "serves up" your website to web surfers. Hence, the name "web server" (which is the hardware part of web hosting). Lucky for you, web hosting has never been cheaper and easier.

Domains and Hosting Together?

Many domain name companies will offer you hosting when you buy your domain through them. This may seem like easy web hosting - because you can 'kill two birds with one stone,' but the reality is that you will usually pay more than if you got these things separately. Not only that, but you'll likely be getting fewer features with your hosting plan. Few people who are serious about web hosting get it from the same place they get their domains. There is one exception that I can think of, but you should generally avoid getting hosting and your domain name from the same source.

Where Should You Start?

Well, that all depends on what your website is going to need, based on your goals: How many visitors do you expect to have? Are you going to have lots of large graphics on the site? Do you have a lot of articles or products that you want to put in a database? Each host you look at will offer you different combinations of features at different price points, and finding the one that's right for you can be very confusing. The only upside to being confronted with these choices is that most will display the different hosting plans in a side by side, easy-to-compare table.

Here's some things to consider when choosing a web host:

Ease of use - which means getting one that uses cPanel ONLY! Cpanel has become THE standard for web host control panels. Anything else is no good, trust me (unless you're going for a customized, high-end personal server).

So this is priority #1 when looking for easy web hosting - regardless of the price.

Storage: The more Megabytes (MB) or Gigabytes (GB) of storage you have, the more you can put on your website. For most websites, this number can be very small without it being much of a concern. You only really need to worry if you're planning to put very large files of data on your site, like a gallery of digital photos or if you want people to download ebooks from you, for example. In these cases you'd want more than the average storage.

Bandwidth per month (as expressed in Gigabytes) is a limit on how much data your website can transfer each month. For small websites, you don't need to worry too much. But as you get more visitors that download pictures, ebooks, software, or other files, the amount of bandwidth you need will increase sharply. And you will be charged a premium amount for any bandwidth over what your original contract allowed. So it's good to get more bandwidth than less if the price isn't much more.

What about MySQL Databases?

MySQL is a program that comes on most servers that allows you to run any program that requires a database to operate. An example would be if you wanted to have a bunch of high-resolution photographs being uploaded and downloaded on a regular basis through a program (many are available - most free - that will do this), or any data-intensive program like this. You will normally only need one MySQL database, so don't pay more to get extra. It's worth noting that your host may offer some other kind of SQL instead of MySQL (for example, PostgreSQL). You should usually avoid anything other than MySQL, because MySQL has become the industry standard; all programs work flawlessly with it.

What about things like PHP, Perl, ASP, JSP, or ColdFusion?

These are all scripting languages, used to write your website. No need to know how they work, but you should make sure your host offers whichever ones that any software you plan to use requires. If you don't have specific requirements, then you should be fine with just Perl and PHP - these are the standard ones that come pre-installed on any server using cPanel. No need to fret over the technical details like these. Just get cPanel hosting to make your easy web hosting goals a reality!

How About Subdomains?

Subdomains allow you to split your website into more sections than just "http://www(dot)yoursite(dot)com." For example, if you wanted people to be able to go to 'shop(dot)yourdomain(dot)com' and 'news(dot)yourdomain(dot)com.' You don't really need these, though, as doing the same thing with subfolders is usually just as effective. What are subfolders? Any extension after a forward slash-- "/" following your main domain name. In the following URL, www(dot)yoursite(dot)com/subdomain-folder, "subdomain-folder" is a subdomain folder! (Of course, you can name it whatever you want.)

FTP accounts:

A FTP (File Transfer Protocol) account is what you'll use to upload your website to your host. You'll always get one of these built into your webhost's control panel, so don't be concerned about that. It's just a native program designed to transfer your website files and graphics from your home computer to your web host's web server. You'll also eventually want to get your own ftp software to load on your computer to upload & download files, images, and whatever else to and from your website/webhost. But the one that comes with your hosting will work for now.

POP3 accounts:

POP stands for 'Post Office Protocol', which is just fancy-speak for "email." The more POP3 accounts you get, the more email addresses you can have. For example, if you want to have several email addresses such as sales(at)yourdomain(dot)com and support(at)yourdomain(dot)com and yourname(at)yourdomain(dot)com, etc.

So your easy web hosting solution should include the standard cPanel interface. (A fancy way of saying "control panel" for uploading, downloading, and manipulating images, files, webpages, etc. on your web host's server.)

Wine Tasting Parties: 4 Easy Steps to Hosting a Great Wine Tasting Party

Thomas Jefferson said, “Good wine is a necessity of life for me”. No wonder he was one of our founding fathers!

More and more people are drinking wine these days and why not? It’s readily acknowledged by the medical community that drinking red wine in moderation has a myriad of health benefits including lowering your risk of contracting heart disease, breast cancer, prostate cancer and cataracts. I don’t know about you, but for me, that’s a good enough reason to enjoy a glass or two every night. In addition, it’s a nice way to relax after a rough day and getting together with friends over a glass of wine is a great venue for socializing and having fun.

One way to do this is by hosting a wine tasting party. Besides being a lot of fun, this is an excellent approach for learning about wine and maybe finding a few new wines you really enjoy. Below are some guidelines that will help you organize a wine tasting that’s sure to be a hit.

  1. Inviting your guests-

The first thing you need to consider when organizing a wine-tasting party is how many people to invite. Generally speaking, 8 to 12 is considered the optimum number of guests. This size group is large enough to promote spontaneous interaction and small enough to be easily manageable.

Whether you telephone, email, or sent written invitations is a personal choice. I happen to prefer sending email invitations. American Greetings has a great card site that includes “eInvites”. It’s a wonderful service where you can send invitations and your guests can simply click a button to RSVP. You can even schedule follow-up reminders. The American greeting site has a $20.00 yearly membership fee, but for all the ecards and services, I think it’s worth it.

  2. Choosing the wine-

In my opinion, choosing the wine to taste at your party is the best part of the planning stage. But then, I happen to get mesmerized every time I walk into a large wine store. There’s so much to choose from.

There are many different ways you can handle wine selection. One option is to consider a themed party. For example: “California Chardonnays”, “German Rieslings”, “Wines Under $10.00”, or “Italian Reds”. The possibilities here are endless, so don’t be afraid to be creative. Another option might be to choose wines from a particular winery or even to select different vintages (years) of the exact same wine. Selecting different vintages of the same wine is called a vertical tasting and this may be more costly to do since older vintages tend to carry a higher price tag.

When buying the wine for your party, keep in mind that for tasting purposes, each pour should be about two ounces. This means that for eight people or less, one 750 ml bottle should be enough.

  3. The question of food-

No party would be complete without food. However, depending on your goal for the event, you may want to wait until after tasting the wine to serve food because food affects the taste of wine and visa-versa. If your goal is to have an informal gathering of friends and experience new wines with good food, by all means serve food paired with the various wines. In fact, an easy and fun way to have a wine tasting party is to ask your guests to bring the various courses (appetizers, soup, salad, dessert) along with a paired wine while you provide the main course and wine.

If your primary goal is tasting and judging new wine, it is more appropriate to wait until after the tasting to serve the food. Instead, during the tasting, provide only unflavored crackers (saltines) or bread to cleanse the palette between wines.

  4. Tasting and rating the wine-

Remember to limit your pours to two ounces (visually, two ounces is about two inches in a normal size wine glass). Place pitchers of water out for your guests to rinse their glasses or cleanse the palate between tastings. Also, have buckets available for those who choose to spit out the wine instead of swallowing it. Spitting is not necessarily an indication of not liking the wine. Many wine tasters spit so they will not be affected by alcohol consumption. Especially if the tasting is to be followed by socializing and drinking wine.

One suggestion for tasting and rating the wine is to simply hand out paper and pens to each of the guests as they arrive so they are able to make notes on each wine tasted. To make this process more structured and organized, you can download and print wine tasting forms from the internet. Clicking on the following link will take you to Wine-Reviewer where you may download a wine tasting review form. Wine reviews [http://www.wine-reviewer.com/hosting-a-wine-tasting-party.htm]
You may reduce the chance of ratings being influenced by personal preference or prejudice by having a “blind tasting”. To do this, completely wrap each of the bottles with aluminum foil and label it with a number. The wine will then be identified and judged by the number on the bottle.

To make the evening a bit more interesting and educational, research the wine, winery and wine-making region. Your guests will probably find the information interesting and will appreciate your effort.

Using these guidelines, having a wine-tasting party is as easy as 1-2-3-4. Have fun, but please remember to drink responsibly and do not let others drink and drive. If possible, have someone be a designated driver to insure that everyone gets home safely.
