Have you heard this story? A man (man, rather than woman, of course) spends ten years becoming a millionaire from scratch. When he reaches that million, he jumps for joy and cries out in happiness, arms outstretched and red-faced with ecstasy. Then he has a heart-attack and dies. The other version is that he hasn't had a holiday in ten years and has always wanted to go skiing. So he goes and dies on the slopes from exertion.
The stereotype. Pasty-faced and looking like he hasn't had a good night's sleep in years, our stereotype nerd works 18 hours a day on his computer. This is just for fun or to make money. He forgets the outside world. The internet is his world. He's also forgotten how to look after his body and brain. He doesn't have many good ideas these days. In fact, he doesn't really think for himself.
Rest. In spite of the analogies with cars and other machines, your body is not a machine. It does have mechanical bits like joints but the difference is that it's alive. It will adapt as best it can, given a chance, but there'll come a point when it can't go any further, even with you willing it. Working long hours to exhaustion deteriorates the body. Regularity of rest and work done in the right way, enliven it.
Dulled. "All work and no play, make Jack a dull boy", so the proverb goes. It's not just you're body that suffers. Your brain suffers too. If you've ever sat at your computer for hours on end surfing, working some problem out or creating something, you'll have recognised that lethargic dullness of your thinking. Creation, especially, needs aliveness and presence. As you go on and on, you can end in a kind of dream, or nightmare, state where your thoughts begin to wander, and you might even begin to wonder why you're doing this activity.
Time away. The answer is to spend as much time away from your computer as you can afford. If you've not got away for a long time, you might need to rejuvenate your body, brain and life. However, treated in the right way internet marketing can be stimulating to the brain, enliven your offline life and keep you emotionally stimulated in terms of constant progress.
